What is Triamcinolone Acetonide?

Triamcinolone acetonide is a synthetic corticosteroid used to treat various skin conditions, relieve the discomfort of mouth sores and in nasal spray form as an over-the-counter relief for allergic and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is a more potent derivative of triamcinolone, being about 8 times as potent as prednisone.

Also known as the brand name ‘Kenelog’ as an injection to treat allergies, arthritis, eye diseases, intestinal problems and skin diseases.

Medical Uses of Triamcinolone Acetonide

Triamcinolone acetonide should not be used by those with tuberculosis or untreated fungal, bacterial, systemic viral or herpes simplex infections without consulting a doctor first. Few serious adverse effects were noted in clinical trials, with pharyngitis, rhinitis, headache and epistaxis being the more common ones. Overdosage is improbable, and the effects of such an overdose appear to be confined to gastrointestinal upset. The maximum dosage for both adults and children (age 6-12) is 220 mcg per day. Individuals with geographic tongue (benign migratory glossitis) can apply it at bedtime to the affected area which heals overnight.

It has been used in various eye diseases and has been found useful in reducing macular Edema. Drug trials have found it to be as efficient as anti-VEGF drugs in eyes with artificial lens over a 2 year period. Complications of its use in eye are – cataract and glaucoma.

When applied as a topical ointment @ USP, 0.1% it is used for blistering from poison ivy, oak, and sumac. Applied to skin avoiding eyes mouth and genital area. Provides immediate relief and is used before going to oral prednisone.

Triamcinolone acetonide is also used in veterinary medicine as an ingredient in topical ointments, also in topical sprays for control of pruritus in dogs. A series of injections with triamcinolone acetonide or another corticosteroid may reduce keloid size and irritation. It is also used as a pre-inductor and/or inductor of birth in cows.
