What is Paroxetine HCl?
Paroxetine hydrochloride is an orally administered psychotropic drug. It is the hydrochloride salt of a phenylpiperidine compound identified chemically as (-)-trans-4R-(4′-fluorophenyl)-3S-[(3′, ‘-methylenedioxyphenoxy) methyl] piperidine hydrochloride hemihydrate and has the empirical formula of C19H20FNO3•HCl•1/2H2O.. The molecular weight is 374.8 (329.4 as free base).
What is the mechanism of action?
Paroexetine hydrochloride is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor with a chemical structure unrelated to that of other such drugs. The effectiveness of Paxil CR in the treatment of depression and panic disorder seems to be linked to potentiation of serotonergic activity in the central nervous system resulting from the inhibition of neuronal uptake of serotonin.
How to dose Paroxetine HCl?
In general, the recommended starting paroxetine dose is paroxetine 20 mg once daily (usually in the morning). However, the starting dose for treating panic disorder and for elderly people or people with liver or kidney problems is lower: paroxetine 10 mg once daily. Your healthcare provider may choose to increase the paroxetine dosage if symptoms continue, or decrease the dose if side effects occur.
The maximum paroxetine dose is 50 mg (for depression, generalized anxiety disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder) or 60 mg (for social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder).
