What is Flubendazole?
FLUBENDAZOLE,anthelmintic for veterinary use on PIG, POULTRY, DOGS and CATS against roundworms and tapeworms. Flubendazole is the ñ-fluoro analogue of mebendazole and belongs to a large group of benzimidazole derivatives which are widely used as anthelminthic in animals. The more potent members of this group have a methyl carbamate substituent on C-2 of the benzimidazole nucleus and the substituent on C-5 probably, confers varying activity within the group by affecting the kinetics of the drug in the animals, in general the more potent and broader spectrum derivatives having lower water solubility. Currently available methyl carbamate substituted benzimidazoles are parbendazole, oxibendazole, mebendazole, fenbendazole, oxfendazole and albendazole. Flubendazole and mebendazole were shown to act by causing the disappearance, shortly after the onset of treatment, of cytoplasmic microtubules in the intestinal cells of Ascaris suum andSyngamus trachea and the tegument of cysticerci of Taenia aeniaeformis. Subsequent to the disappearance of the microtubules there was a blockade of movement of secretory granules and eventual lysis of absorptive cells. Of a series of over 80 alkyl-(5-acyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-carbamates evaluated for their anthelmintic activity against Syphacia muris and Strongyloides ratta, mebendazole and flubendazole were selected as having the greatest activity.
