What is Ivermectin?
Ivermectin (22, 23-dihydroavermectin B1a + 22,23-dihydroavermectin B1b) is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic avermectin medicine. It is sold under brand names Stromectol in the United States, Ivomec in Europe by Merial Animal Health, Mectizan in Canada by Merck and Ivexterm in Mexico by Valeant Pharmaceuticals International. While in development, it was assigned the code MK-933 by Merck.
What is the mechanism of action?
Ivermectin binds selectively and with high affinity to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in invertebrate muscle and nerve cells of the microfilaria. This binding causes an increase in the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions and results in hyperpolarization of the cell, leading to paralysis and death of the parasite. Ivermectin also is believed to act as an agonist of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), thereby disrupting GABA-mediated central nervous system (CNS) neurosynaptic transmission.
How to dose Ivermectin?
Take ivermectin tablets by mouth with a full glass of water. Do not take ivermectin with food. Follow the directions on the prescription label. As a general rule take ivermectin tablets 1 hour before breakfast. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
