What is Bicalutamide?
Bicalutamide, sold under the brand name Casodex among others, is an antiandrogen medication that is primarily used to treat prostate cancer.It is typically used together with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogue or surgical removal of the testicles to treat advanced prostate cancer.Bicalutamide may also be used to treat excessive hair growth in women, as a component of feminizing hormone therapy for transgender women, to treat early puberty in boys, and to prevent overly long-lasting erections in men.It is taken by mouth.
How does Bicalutamide work?
Bicalutamide is in a class of medications called nonsteroidal antiandrogens. It works by blocking the effect of androgen (a male hormone), to stop the growth and spread of cancer cells.
Bicalutamide Side effects:
Casodex (bicalutamide) is an anti-androgen (male hormone) used together with another hormone to treat prostate cancer. Casodex is available in generic form. Common side effects of Casodex include:
• flushing and sweating (hot flashes)
• body aches and pains
• back pain
• pelvic pain
• joint or muscle pain
• breast swelling/tenderness/pain
• headache
• dizziness
• drowsiness
• trouble sleeping
• increased nighttime urination
• weakness
• hair loss
• weight changes
• constipation
• diarrhea
• stomach upset
• gas
• nausea
• vomiting
• loss of appetite
• impotence
• loss of interest in sex
• trouble having an orgasm
• sore throat
• runny nose
• other cold symptoms
Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Casodex including:
• vision changes
• numbness or tingling of the hands or feet
• swelling of the arms or legs
• unusual or easy bleeding or bruising
• changes in the amount of urine
• painful urination
• signs of infection (e.g., fever, chills, persistent sore throat)
• trouble breathing
• persistent cough
• mental/mood changes (e.g., anxiety, depression).
The recommended dose for Casodex therapy in combination with an LHRH (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone) analog is one 50 mg tablet once daily (morning or evening), with or without food. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are taking a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin). There may be other medicines that can interact with Casodex. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor. Casodex should not be used in women or children. It must not be used in a woman who may be pregnant or breastfeeding. This medication may cause harm to a fetus or breastfeeding baby.

Precautions Before Using Bicalutamide:

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, diabetes, heart disease.
This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).
This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Tell your doctor right away if you get sunburned or have skin blisters/redness.
Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
This medication should not be used in women, especially during pregnancy or breast-feeding. It may harm an unborn or breast-feeding baby. Consult your doctor for more details. Male patients and their female partners should use reliable forms of birth control during and for 130 days after treatment with bicalutamide since this medication may damage sperm.
