Abacavir Sulfate is a synthetic carbocyclic nucleoside analogue with inhibitory activity against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The chemical name of Abacavir Sulfate is (1S, cis)-4-[2-amino-6-(cyclopropylamino)-9H-purin-9-yl]-2-cyclopentene-1-methanol sulfate (salt) (2:1). Abacavir Sulfate is the enantiomer with 1S , 4R absolute configuration on the cyclopentene ring. It has a molecular formula of (C14H18N6O)2•H2SO4 and a molecular weight of 670.76 daltons.

Abacavir Sulfate is a prescription medicine taken orally to treat HIV-1 infection.

How does Abacavir Sulfate work?

Abacavir Sulfate is a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). Abacavir Sulfate is always used with other anti-HIV-1 medicines. When used in combination with these other medicines, Abacavir Sulfate helps lower the amount of HIV-1 found in the blood.

Do not use Abacavir Sulfate if you:
  1. have ever had a serious allergic reaction to Abacavir Sulfate or any other medicine that contains Abacavir.
  2. have a liver that does not function properly.

  • The most common side effects of Abacavir Sulfate include nausea, vomiting, tiredness, headache, diarrhea, trouble sleeping, fever and chills, and loss of appetite.
