Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride is a sedative with analgesic properties used in dogs and cats to enable physical exams, various clinical and/or surgical and dental procedures. It may also be given as a premedication prior to general anesthesia in dogs.

What is the drug?
  • Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride is a synthetic alpha-2-adrenergic agonist with sedative and analgesic properties (non-narcotic)
  • Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride is given by intramuscular (in the muscle) and/or intravenous (in the vein) injection in dogs and cats
Reason for Prescribing:
  • To produce sedation and analgesia in dogs and cats
  • Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride may also be used as a preanesthetic drug, significantly reducing the amount of general anesthesia necessary
What dogs/cats should not take this medication?
  • Pets with respiratory conditions, heart, liver or kidney diseases
  • Pets with diabetes
  • Pets in shock, severely debilitated or experiencing stress due to heat, cold or fatigue
  • Use in puppies less than 16 weeks, kittens less than 12 weeks and geriatric dogs and cats has not been evaluated
  • Use in breeding, pregnant or nursing dogs and cats has not been evaluated
  • Pets with known hypersensitivity to alpha2-adrenergic agonists
